After a week on its best behavior in covering the death of President Reagan, The Today Show wasted no time in getting back on the Kerry team this morning.
From the Democrat perspective, good news is bad news. And some of the worst news in recent months has been the good news on the economy: GDP growing at a very robust pace, and of course, a boom in new jobs, coming at an annual rate of about 3 million in the last few months.
Faced with this 'grim' picture Today desperately thrashed around and this morning came up with a hook: "it's the inflation, stupid."
The phoniest technique in journalism is man-in-the-street interviews. You can of course find people who will take all sides of every issue (and no I'm not referring to Kerry, who singlehandedly does that himself). I mean that through selective editing, the media can portray public opinion in any way they wish.
And so Today treated us to interviews with a group of dazed and confused people in the street. The one with the most negative views of the economy - a slightly freaky looking young woman, was given two separate sound bites. In the first she described the economy as feeling like "a depression." And later she was heard to make some equally gloomy observation.
Interviews with others confirmed this view of a deeply troubled populace, concerned by rising prices and uncertainty. The only person in the street with an upbeat view was carefully identified as a "banker" (ignore him, just a capitalist pig profiting off the misery of others.)
The reporter in the segment, Carl Quintanilla, 'helpfully' chipped in with his own editorializing, describing the mood in the country as one of "middle class blues," and interspersing his report with segments on rising prices in various market areas, including milk, college education and home prices. Of course the recent sharp decrease in gas prices goes against the trend, but Today wasn't going to let that get in the way of a good story.
All in all, another solid campaign piece by the Kerry for President team . . . uh, by The Today Show, that is.
Today Show ping.
And, after the "negative economic" news from the Today program, I saw they were going to have that very little guy Micky Moore on. I just turned it off.
And I'm ripped when I mention anything to do with Imus on MSNBC. At least "Imus in the Morning" is adult programming. You deserve a medal for watching any of the morning alphabet shows. It's above and beyond the call.
Gov, I was just wondering.....has the Today Show EVER promoted or said ANYHTING positive about Bush or his administration.
BTW, if I may, Imus just asked George Stephanopoulos who he will have on his program Sunday. George said he is trying to get Michael Moore.
There simply is no way that the economy could be performing as it is without a corresponding increase in promotions, wage increases, etc. Granted some people will have to change jobs to take full advantage of the increased economic activity, but the competition for labor cannot fail to have a beneficial effect on everyone who CHOSES to take advantage of it.
And then they follow with Michael Moore! Had to switch to Sportscenter at that point.
No.
LOL - you nailed it! Could anyone be more annoying than that "edgy" young woman moaning about "the depression"?
It is interesting that they mentioned two items that have been rising higher than the rate of inflation for years, healthcare and tutition. This is not news.
There were no facts in this story. If you take out energy and food in the CPI number yesterday it is at .02%
This is what we are up against. Lies and false facts. I realize it is nothing new, but it seems more brazen these days.
I know I can't watch Today. It's totally beyond my capacity. Hell, I can't even stomach Imus.
Hilarious commentary. Sad but true.
"Can't stomach"? Tell me about it! I've come down with acid reflux since starting to make these reports on Today Show liberal bias!
everyday they lose more audience..
Just rats being rats. Nothing new here.
Not one of his better shows thia AM. He's been promoting a Jack Nicholson (Larry Kenny) essay on Bill Clinton's new book and his appearance on CBS this Sunday. I'm hoping it will be on next half hour. Imus very seldom promotes Kenny's or McCord's stuff. It better be good.
I heard the interview. Just another commie on the radio.
Well, it was a funny read. God bless ya.
